When the yarn is uniform through the skein, the remaining length is proportional to the remaining weight. Use the same weight unit for the full skein and the leftover ball. A digital kitchen scale that reads small increments gives the best result.
When the estimate may be less accurate
Moisture, a cardboard core, knots, mixed dye lots or yarn that changes thickness can affect the estimate. Treat the result as planning guidance rather than an exact laboratory measurement.
